Valentine’s Day is an awaited holiday celebrated during the month of February. On this day many people exchange treats, friendship cards and lots of candies as a sign of love and affection. Our students look forward to celebrating this holiday and all the fun activities that this day brings. This holiday is very important for many students because they feel appreciated by others and they have a chance to reaffirm their friendships. In the library we have many books that celebrate this holiday with fun and interesting stories that students can check out and read at home with their parents, friends or by themselves. However, we also have many books that promote how we can grow to be caring citizens in a world that needs lots of empathy, compassion, and kindness all year long for everybody and everything that surrounds us.
When we care for others, we don’t have to wait for a special holiday to show it. When we care for others, we can express it in multiple ways, many of which don’t cost anything. Giving a thank-you note like Mr. Curtis did in the book by Kevin Henkes: Good-bye Curtis is a simple way of showing appreciation for what someone did for you.
Listening carefully when others are talking and thinking of their needs is being caring by showing empathy. You can be caring with your parents, siblings, neighbors, teachers, animals and most importantly, you can be caring with yourself. Read more about it in the books: I Am Caring, Soy Bondadosa, and Treat me Right! – Kids Talk About Respect.

We Share One World by Jane E. Hoffelt is an amazing book that can start the conversation of caring for the planet and the world around us. “You and I can dream one dream. We share one world – Let’s live in peace” is the closing of this beautiful picture book illustrated by Marty Husted. Caring is a verb that should be explained with actions. Actions should show a deep commitment to protect what we love. The planet needs us all to care for it because it is our home.
There are many books that can show how being caring is the best present you can give when families and friends are going through difficult situations. Check out these touching stories to understand how important it is to be caring when things are not necessarily the way we want: You Hold Me and I’ll Hold You, Bye Mis’ Lela and Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs.
Showing random acts of kindness or RAKs, like some people call them now, are an excellent way of making a positive difference. No matter how small your act of kindness is, the impact can be immeasurable, especially when they are unexpected like the surprise that Anna and her grandma gave to Dad on his birthday in the touching story by Eve Bunting: The Wednesday Surprise.

I hope that we can celebrate friendship all year long while reading many books and showing how wonderful it is to be caring today and always.
